Probation is court-ordered supervision as an alternative to imprisonment. The offender must comply with conditions: reporting, no further offences, maintaining employment. Breach results in imprisonment. Used for young, first-time, or minor offenders.

In Indian Law

Probation of Offenders Act 1958. Section 3: release on admonition. Section 4: release on probation for offences not punishable with life/death. Section 6: persons under 21 should be given probation except for grave reasons.
