Parole
Conditional, supervised early release of a prisoner before completion of their full sentence.
Full Definition
Parole is supervised early release after imprisonment. Conditions: regular reporting, travel restrictions, no further criminal activity. The period on parole is not counted towards sentence served.
In Indian Law
Governed by state prison rules (Prison Act 1894). Two types: emergency parole (urgent family circumstances) and regular parole (social integration). In State of Haryana v. Mohinder Singh (2000), the Supreme Court held parole cannot be extended indefinitely.
