Compoundable Offence

An offence that can be settled privately between complainant and accused, with or without court permission.

Full Definition

Section 320 CrPC divides compoundable offences: (1) without court permission � minor offences; (2) with court permission � more serious offences. Non-compoundable offences cannot be settled privately.

In Indian Law

Section 320 CrPC (Section 359 BNSS). In Gian Singh v. State of Punjab (2012), the Supreme Court held High Courts can quash FIRs even for non-compoundable offences under Section 482 CrPC where genuine settlement exists.
