Suo motu describes a court initiating action without any formal application � based on newspaper reports, letters, or TV coverage. Particularly common in the Supreme Court and High Courts for PIL-type matters.

In Indian Law

The Supreme Court has exercised suo motu jurisdiction under Articles 32 and 136. Famous instances: Vishaka guidelines (1997), Sunil Batra prison conditions, COVID-19 pandemic response (2020-21). Section 303 BNSS allows magistrates to take suo motu cognizance.
