Contempt of Court

Wilful disobedience of a court order or behaviour that scandalises or interferes with the administration of justice.

Full Definition

Civil contempt: wilful disobedience of a court order. Criminal contempt: publications that scandalise the court, prejudice ongoing proceedings, or interfere with justice. The purpose is to maintain the rule of law � not to protect judges personally.

In Indian Law

Contempt of Courts Act 1971. Articles 129 (Supreme Court) and 215 (High Courts). Maximum punishment: 6 months or Rs. 2,000 fine or both.
