A legal proceeding where a higher court reviews a lower court's decision to correct errors of law or fact.
Full Definition
An appeal is a statutory right to have a higher court re-examine a decision. It can be on law, fact, or both. There is no inherent right of appeal � it must be granted by statute. The Supreme Court has special leave jurisdiction under Article 136.
In Indian Law
Sections 372-394 CrPC (Sections 415-435 BNSS). The accused can appeal against conviction; the state can appeal against acquittal. The High Court hears appeals from Sessions Court; the Supreme Court from High Courts.
