PMMSY

Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana

PMMSY is India's largest fisheries development scheme — ₹20,050 crore over 5 years targeting doubling of fish production, tripling exports, and creating 55 lakh new employment. It covers the entire fisheries value chain: fish seeds, ponds, cages, recirculating aquaculture systems, processing plants, cold chain, fishing vessels, harbours, and markets. Beneficiaries include inland fishers, marine fishers, fish farmers, SHGs, and fisheries cooperatives. Central subsidy is 40% for general category and 60% for SC/ST/women/differently-abled beneficiaries. Linked to PM Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY, 2023–27) which adds formalisation, insurance, and credit access for fishermen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a fish farmer get PMMSY subsidy for building a pond?

Yes — construction of new fish ponds (FRP, earthen) is eligible under PMMSY with 40% subsidy (60% for SC/ST/Women). The pond must be for aquaculture and must meet NFDB technical standards. Apply through your District Fisheries Officer or state fisheries department.

What is the PMMSY subsidy for biofloc fish farming?

Biofloc technology tanks are eligible under PMMSY with 40%–60% subsidy depending on beneficiary category. Biofloc allows high-density fish farming with minimal water use — especially useful in water-scarce areas. NFDB provides detailed technical specifications for eligible biofloc unit designs.

What is PM-MKSSY and how is it different from PMMSY?

PM Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY, 2023–27) is a ₹6,000 crore supplementary scheme focused on: (1) formalising the unorganised fisheries sector through registration, (2) providing microfinance and credit access to small fishermen, (3) accident and life insurance for registered fishermen, and (4) market integration via digital platforms. PMMSY builds infrastructure; PM-MKSSY formalises and protects fishermen.
