Digital India

Digital India Programme

Digital India Programme (launched 1 July 2015) is a transformational national initiative comprising 9 pillars: broadband highways (BharatNet), universal phone connectivity, public internet access (CSCs), e-Governance, e-Kranti (electronic delivery of services), information for all, electronics manufacturing (Make in India link), IT for jobs, and early harvest programmes. The programme has fundamentally reshaped India's digital landscape: from 25 crore internet users in 2015 to 900 crore+ broadband connections, from paper-based government to 3,000+ online services, from no digital identity to 140 crore Aadhaar holders with DigiLocker and UMANG access. BharatNet has connected 2 lakh+ Gram Panchayats with optical fibre. Common Service Centres (5.8 lakh+) serve as digital delivery points for rural populations. India Stack (Aadhaar + UPI + DigiLocker + eSign) built under Digital India is now a global model for digital public infrastructure.
