Section 177

Section 177 is the catch-all penalty provision of the MVA — the default fine for any violation of the Act or its rules that does not have a specific penalty prescribed elsewhere. It operates as the minimum floor of the penalty structure: ₹500 for first offence, ₹1,500 for subsequent. Most minor traffic violations — failure to dim headlights, improper road position, not using indicators, failing to display required documents (Section 130), parking violations (Section 117), ignoring minor traffic signs — attract this general penalty when no specific provision applies. The 2019 Amendment increased the general penalty from ₹100 to ₹500 (a 5x increase) — a deliberate policy signal that even minor violations carry meaningful consequences. Section 177A was added to specifically cover violation of road regulations prescribed under this Act — including provisions relating to golden hour, good samaritan protections, and other new 2019 mechanisms.
