Intra Vires

/IN-trah VY-reez/

Within the powers — an act or law within the legal authority of the person or body that performed it.

Full Definition

Intra vires (Latin: 'within powers') is the opposite of ultra vires — an act done within the scope of legal authority. Courts apply the doctrine of 'reading down' to save a law that would otherwise be ultra vires by interpreting it narrowly.

In Indian Law

The Supreme Court in Shreya Singhal v. Union of India (2015) struck down Section 66A IT Act as ultra vires while reading down Section 79 to make it intra vires.
